Charlize Theron on 50lb Tully weight gain: Actress admits keeping bags of potato chips in her BATHROOM to fatten herself up for role

She proved she's more than dedicated to her craft after gaining 50 pounds to portray a tired mother-of-three in new movie Tully.

And Charlize Theron has credited endless bags of potato chips as being her main source of weight gain as the star opened up about her processed diet on Wednesday's edition of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The 42-year-old actress admitted she surrounded herself with bags of crisps at all times to ensure she didn't slack - even storing them in the bathroom and on her couch.

Describing her brutal diet, Charlize confessed: 'I ate a lot of everything, but my favourite thing, my drug of choice, is potato chips. I ate them everywhere.

'I had a bag in my car, a bag in my bathroom, a bag in the kitchen, a bag in the couch, a bag in my trailer - everywhere I went, there was a bag.'

But Charlize admitted that while her fatty diet was pleasing on the taste buds, she wasn't expecting it to take such a toll on her mood, as she revealed her bad nutrition caused her to battle with depression for the first time.

She explained: 'I wasn't prepared for how that amount of processed food would affect your mood and I dealt with depression for the first time.

Moving on: Charlize Theron has claimed her 50 pounds Tully weight gain 'isn't a big deal', despite previously revealing that overeating gave her depression

'What they say about what you eat is kind of who you are is so true because I ate like a person who just didn't move and I felt like that and I was lethargic and tired all the time.'

The Atomic Blonde star continued: 'That was a hard thing to break because it's more mental than physical. You can stop eating, but if you don't feel good about yourself then you don't feel like you can do it and it's hard.'

Charlize admitted that her 50 pound weight gain wasn't a prerequisite for the role, though the Oscar-winning actress thought it was essential for her portrayal of a mother who has just given birth to her third child.

She enthused: 'Mothers do this every single day. They get pregnant and they gain all that weight and it takes them a year and a half to lose it and if they don't they get judged.'

Hoping to break the stigma around parenting and weight gain, Charlize added: 'I feel like I had to do it for the film.

'If I was gonna go and play a mother who was having her third child, I felt a responsibility to do that and I feel like, as an actor, I wanted to feel as much as I possibly could.'

Ellen also highlighted Charlize's weight gain for iconic movie role Monster - which saw Charlize portray prostitute turned serial killer Aileen Wuornos - though the star was quick to insist losing the weight was a lot more difficult at the age of 42.

She confessed: 'I gained less but I think because I was like 27, I just didn't snack for a week and I was back into shape - it was insane.'

Charlize previously revealed that her Tully weight gain took her an entire year to shift.
