FEMA assistance available for Rhode Island renters affected by flooding

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island renters in Kent, Providence and Washington counties affected by the December, 2023 and January, 2024 flooding can apply for federal disaster insurance.

FEMA Individual Assistance is available to renters including students, along with homeowners.

Temporary housing maybe also be paid for with federal grants, with initial grants lasting one-to-two months with reviews for further assistance.

FEMA’s Other Needs Assistance program can also be utilized by Rhode Islanders for uninsured essential personal property losses and other disaster-related expenses, including:

  • Replace or repair of necessary personal property such as clothing, textbooks, or school supplies and purchased furniture and appliances. (FEMA does not cover furniture provided by a landlord)
  • Replacement or repair of tools and other employment-related equipment needed by the self-employed.
  • Primary vehicles
  • Uninsured or out-of-pocket medical, dental, childcare or moving and storage expenses.
