Latest News: Funds Available to Create Educational Apps on Congress and Civics

The Library of Congress today announced that up to $950,000 will be provided to one or more organizations to support the development of engaging web- and mobile-based applications on the subjects of Congress and civics for use in K-12 classrooms.

The application deadline is April 30, 2018. For more information about the application requirements and selection criteria, see the “Notice of Funds Availability” at loc.gov/teachers/newsevents.

The selected organizations will work with the Library’s Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program to use and incorporate not only its online primary sources but also the many other resources available online from the Library of Congress.

A wide range of organizations are eligible to apply, including public, private, not-for profit and for-profit organizations, institutions of higher education, cultural institutions and other collaborative partnerships (such as an organization with content expertise paired with an organization possessing technological expertise).

Applicants should demonstrate a record of success in the development and implementation of curricular programs on Congress and civics and/or the development and long-term maintenance of successful online interactives or mobile apps for classroom use.

Individual funding levels will depend on the content and quality of applications and the number of applications received. There is no minimum award amount. The grants will support program activities for 24 months, from October 2018 through September 2020.

From stepping behind the camera with photographers who fought against child labor to building a timeline that traces African-Americans’ journey toward freedom, students are able to do all these things and more using the set of free educational interactives developed by grantees last year, accessible at loc.gov/teachers/civics-interactives.

For more than a decade, the TPS program has provided extensive professional-development opportunities for educators and enabled the development and dissemination of teaching materials focused on using the Library’s digitized primary sources. In the fiscal 2015 appropriation, Congress allocated additional funds to the TPS program to increase competitive opportunities for developing online interactives and mobile apps for classroom use on Congress and civics.

The Library of Congress is the world’s largest library, offering access to the creative record of the United States—and extensive materials from around the world—both on-site and online. It is the main research arm of the U.S. Congress and the home of the U.S. Copyright Office. Explore collections, reference services and other programs and plan a visit at loc.gov, access the official site for U.S. federal legislative information at congress.gov and register creative works of authorship at copyright.gov.
